Practice #1 : burning fears


 

Here are some answers to common or previously asked questions for Practice #1.

Is it ok when I don’t do them daily but maybe every second day?

Adopting a daily practice can be beneficial, as the effects build over time, and it also becomes a habit. 

But to begin, it might actually be better to take a slower pace, just to give you a chance to integrate the shifts as they begin.

So, no worries at all if you miss any days.

Do I need to write the same fear more than once?

I would recommend choosing a different fear or worry every time. 

The idea is that once you burn it; it’s done! 

You don’t need to repeat the same fear, just do it once, intend to release it, and then trust that you have. 

If you have a particular deep-rooted fear, you may need to approach it from different angles if you feel it’s not shifting after a few weeks. 

For example if fears are related to your work or business or money (very complex issues!), see if you can drill down to the precise issue that you feel most strongly that day. 

The more specific, the better. 

Eg instead of: I intend to release my fear around earning more money. 

Try this: I intend to release the old idea that making lots of money is greedy. 

Do you see the difference? One is quite general, and the other is clearly a specific issue that needs shifting if you want to say hello to financial flow.

How many fears should I clear in one day?

I would recommend just doing one a day, a different fear or worry every time. 

When I started this practice last year, I began doing just one specific fear or doubt per day – whichever felt most pressing – and I soon noticed the shifts.

I’m of the view that little and often is more sustainable and also gentler on our nervous systems. 

Clearing too much in one go might be a bit overwhelming.

Is it better to burn/release the old belief in the evening or can it be done at any time of the day?

Play around with what works for you and your life.

We all have different regimes and commitments, but these are your practices, so feel free to make them your own. 

As with any beneficial practice – the best way to do it is the way you are most likely to keep doing it.

Does an evening clearing connect with your sleep cycle?

Great question!

Given that rest helps us to adjust to energetic shifts, doing the clearing in the evening allows your overnight sleep to process the changes.

But if a different time feels more aligned for you, I’d say go with that.

As long as you’re doing your best with the Self-Care practices, you will be integrating the shifts well, regardless of the time of day you do the practice.

If I can't think of a fear, can I just consider what needs clearing for a day or so?

Absolutely!

Adopting a gentle pace and regular tuning in will really serve you well with this practice, and it’s also a fabulous practice for more conscious awareness and aligned living in general.

Maybe get into the habit of tuning into what feelings creep up during the day and in the evening write something down about the most pressing one and release.

What's a good example to start with?

A good place to start is to release any fears around releasing fears!

Perhaps you could simply set the intention to not be afraid to let go of those old beliefs that don’t serve you anymore, and then jot down any resistance that comes up. 

Then take a deep breath and see if you feel ready to burn it. If not, see if you can write a version that you would be happy to release.

What if I feel resistance to letting fears go?

Here’s an example of an empowering affirmation you can use to help you relax and release unhelpful fears more easily;

“It’s OK for me to let go of old beliefs that don’t serve me anymore.

They have served the purpose to protect me in the past
but now it’s time to let go and grow.

I don’t have to be afraid to do it.

I can choose to do it with joy and enthusiasm.”

You could also release the fear of releasing fears – see the Question above.

If you find that excuses or resistance come up around this practice, it’s a great idea begin with clearing that, and then do more, little by little, what ever feels right on that day.

How long do I need to keep doing this?

I recommend adopting it as a regular(ish) practice for a while, but I don’t feel it needs to be a lifelong thing.

So, if it starts to feel laborious or like a chore, feel free to review how you feel about it as a practice, maybe take a break and reassess.

I did it every evening for about a month last year and I’m sure it shifted a huge amount, but these days, I only ever do it whenever I’m lighting the fire, or if I feel a particular issue needs an intentional release.

As with all of these practices, experiment and assess, tune into what works for you, and trust your own judgement – that in itself is one of the best routes to more flow. :-)
